About Lange & Söhne: The history of Lange watchmaking artistry is closely related to the company’s Saxon homeland. The roots of its values and ideals that are still valid today date back to the Royal Court of Saxony under the reign of Augustus the Strong.
At A. Lange & Söhne, every part of a movement is decorated with its very own finissage tec18K Gold Lange Sohne Mens Watchhnique, whether or not it is visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback of the watch. Additionally, as these finishing touches are applied by hand, Lange’s finisseurs endow each timepiece with their personal signature.
On 7 December 1845, Ferdinand A. Lange established the first production facility for pocket watches in Glashütte and began to train 15 young people from the impoverished region with the aim of turning them into accomplished watchmakers. This courageous step was preceded by long negotiations with the government of Saxony which he had asked to support his venture. Finally, he was granted a repayable loan of 7820 thalers.
Ferdinand-A-Lange-MonumentFerdinand A. Lange introduced the metric system in watchmaking; this change simplified the calculation of movement parts. To craft components with greater accuracy, he fitted the lathes with flywheels instead of the bows that were common-place in those days. And to increase the stability and resilience of watch movements, he invented the three-quarter plate that was to become one of the typical hallmarks of watches made in Glashütte.
After he had trained his apprentices in all basic manufacturing techniques, he encouraged them to specialise in particular technical domains. This is how their individual talents were used to enhance the quality and precision of pocket watches. Several years later, many of them founded their own workshops where pinions, mainspring barrels, or hands were crafted. Eventually, Glashütte became a hub of German precision watchmaking that helped a growing number of people make a decent living.
For thirty years, Ferdinand A. Lange fought hard to make his venture a success. In 1875, he died – only 60 years old. During this period, he had established a flourishing manufactory that enjoyed considerable prestige. His venture had brought back modest prosperity to Glas-hütte. In 1895, the town, which he also served as a mayor for 18 years, erected a monument for him in commendation of his great merits.
After Ferdinand A. Lange died, his sons Emil and Richard assumed the responsibility for managing the company that had operated under the name A. Lange & Söhne since 1868. It was the year in which Richard Lange became a co-owner of the manufactory. His younger brother Emil joined the firm three years later.
Together, they evolved A. Lange & Söhne timepieces to a degree of mechanical and artisanal maturity that perpetuated the renown of A. Lange & Söhne to this very day. Richard Lange in particular had inherited Ferdinand A. Lange’s horological talent and, following in his father’s footsteps, he relied on the latest scientific insights as he designed new calibres. Overall, the company was granted 27 patents and utility models for which he can take credit.
To this day, Lange & Söhne timepieces are still crafted by their time honored tradition:
A. Additionally, as these finishing touches are applied by hand, Lange’s finisseurs endow each timepiece with their personal signature.
All movements inside A. Lange & Söhne watches are calibres crafted and finished in-house at the manufactory. To a very great extent, these operations must be performed manually, because the human hand is still much more sensitive and versatile than a tool can ever be.

Automaton Mechanical Music Bird Boxes & Bird Cages | Buy, Sell, Appraise Singing Musical Birds

Automaton musical / singing bird boxes and bird cages are mechanical masterpieces which have sang charming tunes since the 19th C. Produced mostly in Europe, the automaton mechanical music bird boxes and cages were made by a variety of well known makers. Each musical piece is uniquely created by the maker and ranges in complexity, material and beauty. Manor Auctions will sell a nice variety of automaton bird boxes and cages consigned from a private Florida collection.

Automaton-Musical-Bird-CageMany of the automaton musical bird boxes and cages are made to be very decorative and ornate, possessing fine, intricate detail. Each bird is made to be life-like in functionality, with moving head, wings, tails and mouth. In come instances real birds were sometimes used. Mechanically, the birds are made to move and react perfectly with the tune or music the box / cage is set to play. Makers went to great lengths to ensure all the mechanics moved in unison to create a brilliant and pleasing finished product. This being said, the automaton musical birds may be found with multiple birds withing a single cage. In these cases, the complexities became even greater in that the birds would sing in harmony, alternating their turn singing alongside each other. The more birds present, the more complex the mechanics and the greater the effort involved.
The automaton musical bird boxes and cages would most often be made from sterling silver, silver-plate, brass and other types of workable metals. These were mostly found to be key-wound, with switches to activate the birds to sing.

This is a great opportunity for collectors to expand their collections. If you do not own a automaton bird box or cage, this is your chance to purchase one of these intriguing mechanical masterpieces. They can be enjoyed and spoke about for years to come.

Native American Sterling Silver Turquoise Jewelry & Belt Buckles | Buy, Sell, Appraise & Auction

Collection of Unique Native American Sterling Silver Turquoise Jewelry & Belt Buckles

Native-American-Sterling-Turquoise-Buckle-1Assorted collection of early and mid-20th C. Native American Sterling Silver Turquoise Belt Buckles, Squash Blossoms, Bracelets, Rings and Belts. Many of the Native American Sterling Silver pieces are signed and possess rare, hard to find, beautiful Turquoise. A majority of the Native American Sterling collection being sold was recently on loan to a New York museum for a year-long Native American History show. The collection is comprised of approximately 60 pieces in total.
Native Americans began making Sterling Silver jewelry in the mid-19th C. using primarily silver coins traded with English, French and American Trappers. The process began with a handful of Native American learning the art of metal working from Mexican silversmiths. Some of these pieces were considered family treasures to be passed through the generations, while others were made to be sold or traded. As years passed, all types of Native American Sterling Silver jewelry pieces found their way in to the marketplace. A great number of people collect and seek out better pieces and makers today to add to their collections or wear.
