James Buttersworth Painting Oil On Canvas Of The Ship Olivebank

James Buttersworth (English 1817 – 1894) An Original Oil On Canvas Painting – The Olivebank is one of the feature art works in Manor Auctions quarterly Fine Art, Jewelry & Collectible Auction at the Lakeland Center this Saturday, October 9th. This particular work is unsigned and has been cut from its original frame. The painting has been mounted to another canvas. It is a beautiful period work of Butterworth and was acquired from a Hudson Valley NY estate, an area where James Buttersworth spent a great deal of time.

Following after his father Thomas Buttersworth a highly regarded maritime artist, James established himself as one of the most noted American ship painters. His striking attention to detail and grace portrayed by his nautical paintings remains unparalleled to this day. They are truly beautiful works which set nicely in most every setting.

Born in England, James Buttersworth moved to the Northeast United States, where he traveled and painted extensively about the waterways. Buttersworth painted up until his death. It is believed about 600 pieces of his works survive today. Many can be found on exhibit in museums throughout the world.
